　1952年、ゼロからのスタートだった戦後ファッションに、一定の方向性をつけるべく、またファッションを戦後文化の柱に育てようという目的のもとFECは創立されました。提唱者でもあり、その後も中心メンバーとしてFECをリードしたのが『装苑』の今井田勲、『婦人画報』の熊井戸立雄、『暮らしの手帖』の花森安治、日本織物出版（現在の日本ヴォーグ社）の瀬戸忠信、『それいゆ』の中原淳 一ら雑誌ジャーナリストたちでした。
　創立半世紀を経た今では、新聞社、テレビを始めとする放送関係、そしてネットの世界からも会員が加わっています。
創立以来、時代の流れに敏感に反応しながらコレクションセミナーの開催、企業トップを招いてのトップセミナー、また海外への合同取材ツアー、さらには阪神淡路大震災後の被災者救援チャリティバザーの開催、ＵＮＨＣＲ（国連難民高等弁務官事務所）への寄付活動など、FECは活動の幅を広げてきました。
　FECの事業のひとつである、毎年開催されるFEC賞は、その年に目覚しい活躍をし、話題となり、わが国のファッション界に貢献した人を会員が選び、顕彰するものです。初代の受賞者は着物デザイナーの大塚末子さんでした。その後、森英恵さんをはじめとする日本を代表するデザイナーが受賞してきました。
21世紀にはいってからは、海外のデザイナーやファッションモデルにもその選考対象を広げ、海外のメディアからも大きな注目を集めるようになりました。今では世界中のデザイナーがこの賞の受賞を望んでいると言えるでしょう。

　FECのような組織は世界でも例をみません。今やファッションという言葉は生活のあらゆる場面で使われようになり、大きな意味を持つようになりました。時代の流れに沿いFECはこれからもさらにファッション業界、そして社会に貢献できる組織として活動を続けていくでしょう。

Established in 1952, the purpose of founding the FEC is to give fashion in Japan a clear, guided direction and to solidify it's role as the foundation of mainstream culture. This was no mean feat considering the concept of fashion was non-existent in postwar Japan and those responsible were Japanese magazine journalists Isao Imaida of So-en, Tatsuo Kumaido of Fujin-Gaho, Yasuji Hanamori of Kurashino Techo, Tadanobu Seto of Nihon Orimono Publishing (presently Japan Vogue) and Junichi Nakahara of Soleil. This type of fashion organisation is the first of its' kind in the world.
In the last 50 years, FEC has continued to attract new members from the newspaper, television and internet media circles. Responding to the changing times, FEC activities have rapidly grown to include World Collection seminars attended by those at the top of their field, collaborative press coverage tours abroad and involvement in organisations such as the Great Hanshin-Awaji earthquake charity bazaar and the United Nations Refugee Agency.
The FEC also awards those who have made remarkable contributions to the Japanese fashion world and the annual awards ceremony is highly thought of amongst the nation's most influential fashion leaders.
Kimono designer Sueko Ootsuka was awarded with the first ever FEC award and subsequent winners have included fashion designer Hanae Mori. In the last decade, an increasing number of international names have been nominated for their influence on Japanese fashion and the awards have received a great deal of attention worldwide. It gives me great pride to know that receiving an FEC award is highly coveted by those in the industry and a true honour to the winners themselves.
The word 'fashion' has infused all aspects of our daily lives and influences of the fashion world are inescapable. Understanding such implications and keeping up with the changing times, the FEC will continue to contribute it's efforts to all aspects of the fashion world and to society.
